Lot 719

1851 N-40 R5 AU50. Frosty medium steel brown and light chocolate with hints of underlying very faded mint color showing through in a few places on both sides. There is virtually no wear at all on this cent but both sides show several low spots where debris came between the dies and the planchet (most likely grease or oil used to lubricate the press mechanisms). Most examples of this rare variety come with similar low spots, but they are especially prevalent on this piece. The coronet at LIB is significantly blunted by a die clog. The only post-striking defect worthy of mention is a tiny speck of carbon in the field off the chin. EDS. CC#5 in the Grellman census. Estimate Value $350 - UP
Discovered unattributed by Allen Ross.
