Lot 69

1800/79 S-193 R4 Overdate 80 over 79, Style II Hair. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Lustrous golden tan with steel brown toning on the highpoints and hints of light bluish steel overtone in protected areas. The only notable marks are a light vertical scuff in the field left of the upper end of the hair ribbon, a dull pinprick under the chin, and a dull nick or planchet chip under the I in UNITED. The scuff left of the hair ribbon is the only mark that catches your eye. E-MDS, Breen state II, with a fine die crack through UN to the fraction bar and extending faintly to the adjacent A. Strong die clashmarks show at ICA, but there is no crack through the denominator and no cud breaks. The overdate feature is bold. This is the finest example of the variety by a wide margin in the Bland and Noyes census lists. Bland says MS61 and finest by 16 points; Noyes says AU55 and finest by 20 points, photo #21895. Our grade is MS60. This is the plate coin for the die variety in Dr. Sheldon's Penny Whimsy and in the 1991 Noyes reference. Comes with an important provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. The only MS graded at PCGS. (PCGS # 36158) Value $50,000 - UP
