1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling Large Planchet Noe-8 R4 NGC graded AU55. A Large Planchet type with a monogrammed "NE" in NEW. Frosty light to medium steel gray and silver. Looks flawless to the unaided eye but there are a few very faint hairline scratches hidden in the toning on both sides. The fields and protected areas display the usual microscopic granularity while the highpoints are smooth, which is typical for the variety (polishing the dies was not a priority at the time). Nicely struck with strong details throughout. The obverse is very slightly misaligned to the top and the reverse off by a similar amount to the bottom leaving parts of a few letters off the planchet. MDS with at cud break at GL in ENGLAND and an obvious lump under the hollow tree trunk. A great example of the "Monogrammed" or "Ligatured NE" type of Pine Tree Shilling.
