Lot 621

1854 N-28 R5 MS62. Lustrous medium brown with traces of mint red on both sides. The fields are satiny and nearly free of marks. A tiny void on the rim right of star 7, a tiny rim nick at star 9, and a barely visible scuff close under the earlobe are the only marks, and they are barely visible with a good glass. EDS, die state a, the earliest state seen. The reverse fields are smooth and fine vertical lapping lines run from the A in STATES down to the O in ONE and C in CENT. A very shallow low spot (caused by debris stuck to the die) covers the upper half of the neck and lower half of the cheek, plus another shows over ENT in CENT. A very attractive example, tied for finest known of this tough die variety. DWH #2346.
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.
Ex Howard R. Newcomb (as a duplicate N-5, which shares this obverse die)-unknown-Stack's 3/11/98:256-Chris McCawley 4/98-R. S. Brown, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 6/2/2002:1369-Chris McCawley 12/03.
