Lot 61

1798 S-166 R1 Style II Hair, Large 8. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. CAC. Choice lustrous medium steel and olive with faded mint red showing on 5% of the obverse and at least 20% of the reverse. Satiny mint frost covers this cent, even the highest points of the devices, and the eye appeal is outstanding. No spots or stains, and the only contact marks are some very light scratches at the left foot of the M in AMERICA. Nicely struck except for the typically weak impression on the bust tip, along the bottom of the date, and on the first A in AMERICA (which is opposite the bust tip). LDS, Breen state VI, with a small internal cud break inside the E in UNITED and narrow rim cud breaks at STA in STATES nearly extending to the adjacent D in UNITED. Struck with the reverse rotated 30 degrees CCW (which caused the weakness on the bust tip). A relatively new discovery of the variety; not evaluated by Bland or Noyes. Our grade is MS63. After reviewing photographs of the top examples of the variety it is our opinion this piece is superior to any others known to us. And it has a significant amount of mint color remaining. A wonderful cent discovered in England (like so many of our best-preserved early cents). The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 2 finer: 1 in 63+, 1 in 64. (PCGS # 36089) Value $20,000 - UP
Discovered in England-William P. (Billy) Paul (American Heritage Minting) 8/16/2006-Douglas F. Bird Collection.
