Lot 576

1851 N-40 R5 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Frosty mint red fading to steel brown on the highpoints with about a third of the planchet showing mellowed mint color. Not sure why PCGS saw this as a "BN" cent. Just a few trivial defects, including a minor spot of slightly darker toning near the hair under the left side of star 7, a nick hidden in the hair over the B in LIBERTY, and a small spot of shallow reddish carbon touching the leaf under the I in UNITED. MDS. The portrait and stars are blunted (as always on this obverse die) and the point up from the top of the E in CENT is sharp. A beautiful example of this rare variety. Our grade is MS63+. Tied for CC#1 in the Grellman census. Pop 1; the finest MSBN example graded at both services. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP
