Lot 569

1851 N-20 R3 First 1 Repunched PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Frosty steel brown and chocolate with mellowed mint red covering 10% of the planchet. The surfaces are satiny and virtually flawless, and the eye appeal is outstanding. However the strike is soft near the periphery on both sides while the central devices are properly impressed. What makes this cent special is the die state. M-LDS, die state c early. The obverse is uncracked but crumbling joins the tops of the C & E in CENT. Multiple repunching of the first 1 remains visible as do the diagonal die lines from the main and inner curls. A faint die crack meanders down from the wreath through the ribbon loop to the rim below, but the other die cracks known for the late die state of this variety are not present. This intermediate die state was unknown to me when I wrote the attribution guide for late date cents, and this is the only example I have seen to date. Our grade is MS60+. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Pop 3; 3 finer in 65. Estimate Value $600 - UP
