Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 123

Lot 560

1801 NC-2 R7 Fair-2. Perhaps a point sharper but dark steel and covered with fine roughness mixed with some faint horizontal scratches on the portrait. No verdigris or notable marks. The date is clear and half of the legends on the reverse are easily readable. The cud break at ES-O is clear. This extremely rare variety combines the obverse die that was used to strike the S-219 3-Error Reverse variety and a new reverse die that broke almost immediately when it was placed into service. Only 10 examples of the NC-2 die marriage are known and most of those are in very low grade. The finest grades F15 and brought $16,675 in our sale of the Daniel W. Holmes, Jr. Collection (9/6/209:415). A heavily worn Basal State-1+ example brought $2645 as lot 416 in that same sale. A very rare opportunity for advanced collectors of the series. Estimated Value $600 - UP
