Lot 557

1798 S-186 R2 Small 8, Style II Hair PCGS graded MS62 Brown, CAC Approved. Sharpness mint state but it may have been dipped long ago, now toned a very attractive frosty dark steel brown and olive with lustrous very faded red in protected areas. The surfaces are essentially flawless; void of spots, stains, or contact marks. The best identifying mark is a tiny planchet chip near the rim behind the head, as struck. This cent has choice mint state eye appeal, and the PCGS grade and CAC approval reflects the natural look of the toning. Sharply struck M-LDS, Breen state VII, with a strong cud break connecting the 00 in the denominator to the rim below. The very shallow low spot on the bottom of the neck is a die flaw that is always present in the later die states of the variety. Graded AU50 and CC#2 in the 1991 Noyes census, his photo #28217. Our grade is AU55. A solid condition census example of this difficult variety. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Pop 1; only 1 example graded higher in MS-64 BN at PCGS for the variety. Estimated Value $9,000 - UP
Discovered by James Finnance in 1991.
