World War Two "A-Bomb Island" Tinian Trench Art. A pair of candlesticks made from two Japanese 25mm naval anti-aircraft gun shells. Each is about 6.75" high and hand decorated with stippling to produce scenes of a palm tree with the sun setting over the ocean and the phrase "Tinian Island 1945." Each shell with Japanese navy markings at bottom and pierced fuses having been fired at American forces during the invasion of the island.
After almost 2000 Marine casualties incurred while securing Tinian, the Seabees transformed it into the largest airport in the world with four runways each 8500 feet long for B-29s attacking Japan. Two of those missions from Tinian ended WW 2 with the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
