Lot 48

1797 S-130 R2. PCGS graded AU-55. Very attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate brown with reddish steel brown tones in fields on the reverse. The sharpness is close to mint state with just a hint of friction on the highpoints, but there is some darker crud at the eye and around the hair ribbon into the field below. Otherwise the only notable mark is a nick in the field left of the lower curls. A very tiny planchet clip weakens a couple dentils over the B in LIBERTY and the opposing dentils under the fraction (as struck). M-LDS, Breen state V early, with a fine vertical die crack in the field before the portrait but before the tiny lump forms on the end of the nose. Graded AU50 and tied for CC#1 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #69698. Not seen by Bland. Our grade is AU50+ sharpness net EF45+. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer: 1 in 58, 1 in 62. (PCGS # 35930) Value $9,000 - UP
Ex a Pennsylvania Estate Auction-unrecorded source at the Long Beach Convention 1/28/2015-Douglas F. Bird Collection.
