Black Americana: Six Very Scarce Examples of Sheet Music for "Cakewalk" Songs Late 19th-Early 20th Century; 4 Works by Abe Holzman (1874-1939) American composer and son of Hungarian-Jewish immigrants in New York, Abraham Holzman most famous for his march and two-step "Blaze-Away" which is included in this collection. His compositions for cakewalk; "Smoky Mokes", "Hunky Dory" and "Algazam" also included here, were for dances developed from "prize walks" (dance contests with a cake awarded as the prize) held in the mid-19th to very early 20th Century generally at get-togethers on Black slave plantations before and after emancipation in the Southern United States. The contrast of cultures could not be more apparent for composer Abe Holzman. But his successes proved remarkable. Also included are "Li'l Mose" by Baldwin Sloan and "After The Possum Hunt" by Horace Basler. Music aside, the covers of the sheet music are quite famous. All the pieces are in good condition and could easily be restored at a nominal cost perfect for archiving or display. Estimated Value $250 - 400

Realized $300
