1908 $5 Indian. NGC graded Proof 66. Magnificent gem! 167 Proof minted. Collectors who first ordered the Indian half eagle Proofs were awe-struck when they received and examined their unusual sandblast coins. They were little prepared for the new appearance. Prior designs had been in the time-honored form of a satin relief set against a background of level mirror polish. Now, the devices were sunken into the field -- again extraordinary -- while the "fields" had become the high points and, further, were encrusted in a novel matte surface that gave them an even tone. Imagine, if you will, the effect on the collector of one hundred years ago this year. (Whoever invented the English language must have been a prose-writer, not a poet, for he has made meager provision for those who would write lyrics about this coin's infinite virtues and open beauty!)
The warm golden color of the 1908 pieces has a level of sandblast finish similar to the finish used in 1911-15, but it differs markedly in the 1909-10 half eagles. The coin we are describing here has been warily sheltered from scratch and hairline, and is struck with super-sharp clarity at all the inner devices. This is among the best examples available to collectors. Truly one among a privileged few. The coin has the edge over others in recent memory, and as such is mandatory that the bidder formulate a strong estimate before the bidding starts.
