Lot 462

1797 S-137 R2 G5. Rather glossy dark olive brown and steel. The surfaces appear smooth but a glass reveals uniform extremely faint granularity under the mostly glossy patina. No verdigris, and the only marks are some very old hairline scratches hidden in the patina, none notable. This cent was struck twice with a 90-degree rotation between the impressions. One strike was centered on the planchet and the off-center impression was 5-10% off center to K-6 (or K-3 relative to the centered strike). The upper half of the date and most of the bust of the off-center impression are clearly visible near the rim before the portrait, and the opposing D STATE is faintly visible hidden in the opposing dentils over S OF AM. An impressive mint error in spite of the low grade. Removed from an ANACS slab graded VG8 (ANACS label #2779788 included, and it notes the Double Struck error). Estimate Value $300 - UP

Realized $470
