Lot 461

1847 N-6 R1 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown. Lustrous bright original mint red fading to light olive brown and steel on the highpoints; about half the red remains on the obverse and two-thirds on the reverse. There are a few small spots of darker toning (not carbon) on the obverse including one at the dentil tips left of star 3, another left of star 5, a third over the right side of star 7, and one between stars 8 & 9. A small speck of crud nestled inside the bottom of the D in UNITED and traces of an old fingerprint inside the wreath are the only notable marks on that side. M-LDS, die state b. The repunching left of the base of the 1 is gone but the spike down from the dentils between stars 6 & 7 is still sharp. Our grade is MS63. A very nice cent, tied for finest known honors with three other examples in the Grellman census. The attribution and Brown-Boka provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $1,750 - UP
