Oscar II King of Sweden and Norway, Rare Signed Original Poem by Oscar with Translation by his Brother plus Letter Addressed to 9 English Knights. Two unusual manuscripts
Oscar II (1829-1907) Last King of Sweden and Norway after the peaceful dissolution between Norway and Sweden in 1905. Besides his statesmanship, Oscar was known for his love of the arts and sciences and actually penned an Easter hymn well known in Scandinavian countries as well as writing poetry. Offered is a a six-line poem in Swedish dated Mar. 5, 1864. "Thou blue ocean, that for many thousand years, Hast beat against the rocks of Scandinavia … To thee I dedicate my son". Poem is signed in Oscar's beautiful handwriting as simply 'Oscar" Full translation in English by his brother Carl Ludvig Eugen, the former King Charles XV and IV according to note above the English translation. 4¼ x 5½" trimmed at top grazing one letter and tipped to sheet.

Unusual letter dated 1660 by a T. Southhampton addressed to nine (9) English Knights imploring, in the most polite and obsequious manner, "a charge of great importance", that being to root out "Puritanism", a reform movement of intensely protestant sect believing the Church of England was too similar to the Roman Catholic Church and should eliminate ceremonies and practices not established in the Bible. 12 x 8¼" Letter still has wax seal with Norfolk written to the side of it.
