Lot 456

1797 S-129 R5 F12. Variety with M over E in AMERICA. Sharpness VF25 but there is a dent in the field near the dentils left of the lower curls. Some experienced EAC members, including Jack Robinson, have speculated that this dent was caused by a piece of metal coming between the die and planchet at the moment of striking, but your cataloger sees this mark as post-striking damage. (For a more comprehensive discussion of the case for this being a mint error, see the Jack Robinson description for lot 169 in the McCawley & Grellman Early Copper Auction catalog of 1/8/1994.) Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and the only marks are a rim bruise at K-3 on the obverse and a planchet delamination over the M in AMERICA. Very attractive glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. EDS, Breen state I, before the die cracks from the dentils behind the head. The date and legends are all strong, and the M over E feature is obvious. Graded VF25 net F12 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #27975. Comes with a nice provenance. Estimate Value $3,000 - UP
