Lot 444

1796 S-87 R3 Liberty Cap VF30. Sharpness VF35 or slightly better but there is a collection of tiny ticks at LI into the field below plus a larger nick under IB. The only other notable defect is a small, shallow spot of reddish corrosion under the left side of the U in UNITED. Attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate with traces of lighter steel brown in protected areas on the obverse. This cent offers excellent eye appeal in spite of the defects. LDS, Breen state IV, with die clashmarks on both sides and a die crack that arcs up through the 7 and bust to the rim just above the end of the pole. In addition there is obvious die rust (tiny lumps on the coin) before the portrait and between the U in UNITED and the stem, plus less-obvious die rust scattered over both sides. An impressive example in spite of the imperfections. Graded VF30 and tied for CC#10 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF35 net VF30 and tied for CC#9, his photo #26273. We all agree for a change. Estimate Value $3,000 - UP
Ex Stack's 6/1970:1216.
