Lot 3868

1920-S Buffalo Nickel. PCGS graded MS-64. A better than average strike. Toned. The usual occurrence is for the reverse to be from a more worn die than the obverse on branch mints from the 'twenties. But in this instance, it seems the obverse die was ready for retirement when it struck this otherwise sharp specimen. The luster is granular with stress-lines typical of the worn die, but the important part is that the luster is complete from tops of the hair waves to the open spaces around the Indian's profile. The condition of the surface is even better than average in that is seems free of spotting and flyspecking, that bane of some buffalo nickels. All in all a refreshing coin that should produce active bids from those who realize its importance in the series in this grade. Pop 273; 17 finer, 16 in 65, 1 in 66 (PCGS # 3946) .
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,000.
The Harpeth Valley Collection.
