Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 130

Lot 364

1866. NGC graded MS-64. Lightly toned and mostly nickel bright. The date is repunched low on this first year of issue of the new copper-nickel coin, which was destined to replace the tiny silver "half dime" then in circulation since the opening months of the Philadelphia Mint in 1792. This new combination of base metals (instead of semi-precious silver) employed a composition of copper at 75% blended with nickel at 25%, and the nickel color proved dominate and these coins are nearly white in color rather the reddish brown as one might expect from the copper alloy. Estimated Value $550 - 600
From the Blackhorse Collection.

Realized $600
