Constantius II, 337-361 AD. Gold Solidus (4.43 g), Rome mint, struck c. 355-357 AD. Rare this nice. Diademed, helmeted and cuirassed bust facing, holding spear with his right hand and with shield, ornamented with star or fulmen pattern, at his left shoulder. Reverse: Roma, seated facing on left, and Constantinopolis on right, both supporting round shield inscribed VOT / XXX / MVLT / XXXX; GLORIA REIPVBLICAE; RSME below, with flanking branches. RIC 291; C. 117; Depeyrot 13/1; Fr-866. Sharply detailed, with excellent strike on a spread flan. A particularly elegant coin from this mint, with compelling portrait. Softly lustrous. Nearly Mint State.
