Lou Gehrig: 185 First Day of Issue 25¢ Commemorative Stamp On Diverse Covers, Many Miniature Works of Art. On July 10, 1989, the US Postal Service issued a beautiful Lou Gehrig featuring an excellent photogravure portrait as part of their American Sports Series. The great majority of the covers have Cooperstown, New York postmarks, the city where the stamp was officially issued. But this collection impresses with the diversity of cachets, illustrations either printed, "silk" portraits or best, hand painted tributes. 24 covers are the very appealing silk cachets all with Gehrig stamp but the covers also have generic baseball themes. There are 130 printed covers with superb photos of Gehrig, a great number playing ball, his accomplishments, older posters and the like. Of those 130 printed covers 60 have affixed stamps centered on covers from Grenada's U.S. Baseball Series 1 issued in 1988 which are most definitely collectible ranging in prices from $3 to some exceeding $20
What stands out are the 26 hand painted cachets, most extremely accomplished and appealing. Most are beautiful caricatures and portraits of Gehrig and moments in his life. Outstanding collection.
Do check out the Babe Ruth commemorative collection also in this auction. Estimated Value $300 - UP
