Crispina, wife of Commodus, AD 177-192. Gold Aureus (7.28 g) minted at Rome, AD 180-183. Draped bust right of Crispina. Reverse: Venus seated left, holding Victory and scepter; under seat, dove left. RIC 287 [as R2]; C. 39; Calicó 2377b. Some luster remaining in the fields. Extremely Fine.

Along with a current war in Britain, Commodus had to contend with an adulterous and plotting wife. Crispina was banished to Capri and murdered there on orders of Commodus in AD 183. Her aurei are quite rare.
