Lot 3507

Aegina, c. 525-500 BC. AR Stater (11.68 g). Most unsual and interesting. Rare thus. Sea turtle viewed from above. Reverse: "Union Jack" incuse, with some segments filled in. Cf. SNG Delepierre 1512ff. Banker' mark on obverse field. Even more fascinating is the fact that this was overstruck on another stater, perhaps that of Melos, with the faint ethnic visible from 2 o'clock to 6: [M]EΛANNIΧΩN(?). Deep old collection toning. Fine plus.
Estimated Value $250 - 350.
Superior Auction, Dec. 11-16, 1972; lot 142.
