Lot 345

1796 S-91 R3 Liberty Cap VG10. Five points sharper but there are too many light contact marks for the higher grade. The only notable mark is a dull but relatively large rim nick over the first A in AMERICA. Attractive glossy light olive and medium chocolate brown with a small splash of darker chocolate brown toning on the cap. Nicely struck LDS, Breen state VIII, with horizontal waves in the obverse fields. A curved planchet clip affects the dentils under the 796 and the opposing ones over TES in STATES (as struck). The date and legends are all strong. Struck on a relatively thick planchet that weighs 166.5 grains in spite of the planchet clip. Estimate Value $1,200 - UP
Ex McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 1/2014:405-Dr. Allan Pirnique.
