Baumgartner, Adolf. Gold Convoy in Siberia. Adolf Baumgartner (1850-1924) had several name variants including Constantin Stoiloff, or as signed here in lower left corner, A. Stoiloff Baumgartner. He was born in Linz, Austria and in the 1880s he studied at St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Fine Arts and became very well known, particularly as a painter of horses. From around 1890 to the early 1900s he began painting thunderous Russian scenes of Cossacks and hunters that were frequently reproduced in various European magazines. Very pleased to offer a fine example of his work during this period, an original oil on wood panel, 12½" x 21" a stunning capture of Cossacks galloping at full speed in the snow boasting incredible detail in the uniforms and most especially his command of capturing horses in all their strength and beauty. Painting is framed in a vintage gilt wood frame measuring 20" x 28" likely from the 1930s, with wear and some chipping nevertheless adding immeasurably to the age of the original art.
