Lot 3268

L. Thorius Balbus, moneyer. AR Denarius minted at Rome, 105 BC. Head right of Juno Sospita, wearing goat-skin headdress. Reverse: Bull charging right; K above. Sear 192; Thoria 1; Cr. 316/1; Syd. 598. Shallow pit on cheek of Juno, and numerous light scratches. Nicely toned. Choice Very Fine.

Thorius Balbus was a native of Lanuvium, where Juno was worshipped as a protectress of women, particularly in pregnancy. The bull on the reverse is a pun on the moneyer's name. Cicero described him as a man who lived in such a manner that there was not a single pleasure, however refined or rare, that he did not enjoy.
Estimated Value $150 - 200.
