M. Herennius, moneyer. AR Denarius minted at Rome, 108-107 BC. Diademed head right of Pietas; below chin, Q. Reverse: One of the Catanaean brothers running right, bearing his father on his shoulders. Sear 185; Herennia 1; Cr. 308/1a; Syd. 567. Attractive iridescent toning. Choice Very Fine.
The moneyer was perhaps related to Herennius Siculus the Haruspex, who had been a loyal adherent of Gaius Gracchus; although the Herennii were probably of Etruscan origin, the tale of the Catanaean brothers, who saved their parents by carrying them to safety when Sicily's Mount Aetna erupted in 122 BC, was a famous example of pietas.
