Republic, Aes Grave Series, c. 289-245 BC. AE Cast Triens (102.05 g) minted at Rome. Thunderbolt; four pellets in field. Reverse: Dolphin right; underneath, four pellets. Cr. 14/3; Thurlow-Vecchi 3a. Even, moderately dark green patina. Very Fine.
The cast coinages of the early Roman Republic are a rich area for future research. Their place of mintage, closer dating and greater hoard information contained in one reference source would fulfill a real need for this fascinating series, all of which can be considered rare.
