Lot 3179

Mysia, Kyzikos, c. 450 BC. Electrum Stater (16.08 g). Head right of Attis wearing Phrygian cap; below, tunny fish. Reverse: Quadripartite incuse punch. Von Fritze I, 142 (same obverse die); Boston 1521; Gulbenkian 644. One of the most engaging obverses of this splendid series. Extremely Fine.

Attis, an uncommon deity as portrayed on ancient coins, was from the province of Phrygia and was associated with Cybele, Great Mother of the Gods. It is still very apparent that these Cyzicene staters were very valuable commodities when held in the hand, and their diversity of types and charismatic nature set them apart from other ancient coins.
Estimated Value $20,000-UP.
Ex Triton XIII (5 I 10), lot 174.

Realized $41,400
