Lot 3173

Great Britain. Crown, 1821. S.3805; ESC-247; Dav-104; KM-680.1. George IV, 1820-1830. SECUNDO edge. Obverse; Pistrucci's laureate bust of king left. Reverse; Classic St George and Dragon design. Mirror fields under a patchy but rather attractive tone, truly blazing prooflike surfaces. Crisp detail and razor sharp edge lettering on this exceptional specimen produced in the year of the King's coronation. NGC graded MS-61.

*George IV was the eldest son of George III and he became king on his father's death in 1820. He was an extravagant man, who would drink and eat to excess, and his over indulgent lifestyle and constant supply of mistresses made him unpopular with the general population. Nevertheless he was a patron of the arts and gave his name to 'Regency' style art and architecture. Fortunately he had the services of some of Britain's greatest coinage designers and engravers - Pistrucci, Merlen, Wyon and Chantrey, and therefore this King left a handsome numismatic legacy.
Estimated Value $1,800 - 2,000.

Realized $2,350
