Lot 317

1840 N-4 R3 Small Date PCGS graded AU58. The so-called 40 over 39 overdate variety. Frosty light brown and steel with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Frosty mint luster covers the protected areas on both sides and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. The best identifying mark is a small spot of reddish brown toning at the dentil tips just left of the date. MDS, die state b, with a rim cud break under the 18 to star 1 and another from star 2 to star 3, and these cuds are clearly defined. The die defects under the date are clear, and these were once considered to be evidence of a 40 over 39 overdate, which is not true. Our grade is EF45+, very close to AU50. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer.
Estimated Value $300-UP.
