Lot 303

1838 N-12 R2 Doubled Die Reverse PCGS graded MS64 Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous uniform medium steel brown with satiny mint frost covering the fields. Tiny peeps of very faded mint color show in a few places on both sides. The only defects are a microscopic planchet chip on the bottom edge of the bust above the first 8 and an extremely light and barely visible rim nick above star 10. MDS. The fields are satiny from fine die flowlines. Looks mint state but there is a hint of rub on the very highest points of the portrait. The doubling on the reverse (from a double-hubbed die, not "machine doubling")) is clear, especially on the berries under TE in UNITED and ST in STATES. Called MS60 and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #27503. Our grade is AU58+ Choice, very close to MS60. The attribution and Dan Holmes provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS #399518. Pop 2; 4 graded higher at PCGS for the variety, 1 in 65, 3 in 66. Estimated Value $1,000 - UP
