Lot 300

1853 N-1 R2 PCGS graded MS65 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Spectacular lustrous bright mint red just starting to mellow to light steel brown on the highpoints with 85% of the original mint color remaining on both sides. No notable spots, stains, or contact marks. The only defects are a few trivial mint-made flaws. These includes a short diagonal struck-through line high on the neck, another microscopic curved struck-through line on the end of the chin, and a nick-like planchet flake under the lower right point of star 3 (all as struck). Sharply struck EDS, scarce die state a. The fine die lines at UNITE are very sharp. A remarkable cent in every respect, one that appears to rate a solid "RD" designation. Our grade is MS65+, CC#3 in the Grellman census for the variety but finest of the early die state. The attribution and Iskra provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 66 for the variety at PCGS. Estimated Value $2,000-UP

Ex Heritage Auctions in 2006, lot 61-Chris McCawley 6/28/2014-Fred Iskra Collection.
