Lot 298

1838 N-8 R1 NGC graded MS65 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous olive and steel brown with mint red covering at least 20% of the planchet. Nearly flawless; void of any spots, stains, or contact marks. The only defect is a tiny planchet chip left of the first S in STATES (as struck). LDS with flowlined fields. The curl over the second 8 is now weak from excessive die wear. Not seen by Noyes but at least equal to the finest example outside of the ANS Museum when compared to the Noyes photographs. Our grade is MS63+. The attribution is noted on the NGC label. Pop 1; tied with another MS-65 RB at PCGS for the finest Red & Brown examples graded at both services, only 1 graded higher in 66 BN at NGC for the variety. Estimated Value $2,000 - UP
Ex Heritage Auctions 10/13/2011:3067-Chuck Hall Collection (lot ticket included).
