Lot 294

1652 Oak Tree Shilling, IN at bottom, 71.60 grs. PCGS graded MS-65. Lovely toning, a wonderful example of oak tree shilling. This is a magnicent gem Oak Tree Shilling. IN at bottom. Noe-4, W-460, Salmon 2-D. 71.60 grains. Reverse alignment about 15 degrees counter clockwise. The oak tree fills the circle and is superbly struck up, with every nuance of the design crisp and bold. A loupe reveals the intricate die polish lines created when the dies were given their final touch up by the engraver, a feature that disappears after the briefest circulation. Here these minute details are preserved in their precision through well over three centuries of careful handling. Today the surfaces show delicate antique gold hues and glowing luster. The strike is bold and the eye appeal is remarkable.

The obverse strike is a bit off center as always seen toward 6 o'clock, but remains sharply defined, unusually so by the dies. The reverse is centered, as always on this die pair. Finding a Noe-4 this boldly struck is challenging enough, but add to this the superlative condition and you have a miraculous combination.

This example is the finest known Noe-4 and is destined for a superb collection of the historic and important Massachusetts coinage.

Pedigree: exhibited in ANS Collection in 1991 and from the Alan V. Weinberg Collection, Part III, Heritage.

Pop 1; the finest example graded at PCGS for the variety. (PCGS # 45362) Estimated Value $150,000 - UP
