Lot 293

(1652) New England Shilling, Noe-III-C, 69.75 grs. PCGS graded EF-45. CAC. Exceptionally rare undated (1652) NE Shilling. Noe III-C, Salmon 3-D. Rarity-6+. 69.75 grains. There are believed to be a net of 16 examples known, but several are impounded in museums bringing to total down to 10 coins in private hands of this die pairing. The surfaces are glorious, with full definition on the simple devices. One minor scuff resides in the lower flourish if the N which hallmarks this specimen. A few planchet waves are present as well, par for the course on these rarely offered and historic coins. The patina includes the classical array of pale gold and a touch of pastel blue iridescence. In sum this is an exceptional example of this historic rarity.

Pedigree. Purchased from Lester Merkin on March 1, 1976.

Only 40 examples estimated to have survived according to PCGS Pop Report. Pop 3; 14 finer, 5 in 50, 4 in 53, 5 in 55. (PCGS # 13) Estimated Value $150,000 - UP

Realized $198,000
