Lot 292

1794 S-48 R5 Starred Reverse PCGS graded G6. Rather glossy medium to dark chocolate brown and steel. The highpoints are smooth but minor roughness covers the fields and protected areas on both sides, strongest at RTY. No verdigris, and the best identifying mark is a small chip or shallow pit under the right edge of the ear lobe. The obverse is sharper than the reverse, as usual for this variety. The date is easily readable (although the 4 is a bit weak) and a third of the tiny stars are still visible. Noyes says G5 and tied for CC#23, his photo #34778. Our grade is net G5+. This is coin 5-A in Pete Smith's 1986 book on the Starred Reverse Cent. A decent example of this famous and very popular "Redbook" variety. Estimate Value $12,000 - UP
