Lincoln, Robert Todd (1843-1926) Eldest son of Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd; the only one of their four sons to survive to adulthood. He served on General Grant's staff during the last few months of the Civil War, was U.S. Secretary of War (1881-85), U.S. Minister to Great Britain (1884-93), and president of the Pullman Company (1897-1911). Autograph Letter Signed "Robert Lincoln" as U.S. Minister to Great Britain, on black-bordered stationery engraved "2, Cromwell Houses. S.W.," 1½ pp (London), 23 March 1890. Lincoln responds to a letter of sympathy from the Hon. Frank Hatton on the death of his only son, 16-year-old Abraham "Jack" Lincoln, from blood poisoning. "I can only write to tell you how much we appreciated your kind words & to thank you for your great thoughtfulness in sending the many newspaper slips. We had a long fight & at times believed we could save poor Jack. You cannot imagine what his loss means to us…." With black-bordered transmittal envelope.
