1794 S-44 R1 PCGS graded AU58. Very attractive glossy medium chocolate brown. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas and this cent offers outstanding eye appeal. The sharpness of this cent is very close to mint state but there are a few small contact marks in the field under LIB, a few more tiny ones under the Y in LIBERTY, and several more on the cheek and neck. None of these marks is significant in its own right but there are too many to ignore. The reverse is flawless and offers mint state eye appeal. Sharply struck MDS, Breen state III early. Both dies are cracked, and the radial crack of star III reaches down to the wreath stem but goes no farther. Our grade is AU55 sharpness net AU50. Noyes says AU55 sharpness net EF45 and tied for CC#2, his photo #38778. Bland says AU50 and tied for CC#2 in his condition census. Both sides of this cent are plated in the 1923 and 1926 Chapman references on the cents of 1794. A sharp, attractive cent in spite of the tiny marks. Estimate Value $10,000 - UP
