Lot 267

1823 Restrike PCGS graded AU58. Glossy chocolate brown mixed with some lighter brown and bluish steel overtones on the reverse. The only marks are a pair of planchet cutter impressions at ICA and under the wreath ribbon, as struck. Just a light touch of friction on the designs from mint state. These were struck outside the mint from 1862 to 1879 using genuine mint dies that were sold as scrap metal. The obverse die is the normal 1823 N-2 but the reverse was from the 1813 S-293, thereby creating a true fantasy variety. LDS with significant die rust and all the known die cracks, including the terminal crack down through TE in STATES to the wreath. Previously removed from an NGC slab graded MS62BN (NGC label #1744246-015). Our grade is AU50. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value $650-UP.
Ex Colonel Steven Ellsworth 1/22/2005-John Koebert.
