1903 $20 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 64. A flashy Proof $20 Gold Coin. Only 158 Proofs struck. Most 1903 Proofs are the same, and few show cameo frost on the devices. Few pieces were struck this year, of which a small percentage survive today in the quality offered here. This particular date has the obverse field deeply basined, from the die-making process, adding more curvature than normal, and giving an especially pleasing reflective effect but also causing a narrowing at the bridge of Liberty's nose from the way the obverse die had to be positioned to achieve the desired mirror polish. Even if you do not contemplate buying it, check it out for the aesthetic experience, perhaps comparing it to the other Proofs offered from time to time in national sales. The present piece combines beauty, rarity, and everything else desirable. Certainly it will be exciting when the moment of sale occurs.
