1900 $20 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 64 Ultra Cameo. Well struck and untoned. A great looking coin. Completely original with spectacular mirror brilliance supporting pulsating misty golden devices. Clearly, this coin is in the "ultra" cameo class. While a refreshing look of fresh-from-the-dies indicators includes everything one would expect from the $20 Liberty design and strong grade assignment by NGC. In former days, the mirror luster on a Proof double eagle was enough to determine a coin's status. Scant regard was given to possible hairlines or marks. Not anymore. And today, just as important is the strike: there is no deviation in the sharp relief seen, not even in the centers of the coin or on the 13 beads or pearls that line the edge of Liberty's coronet or crown. Only 124 struck. Pop 2; 3 finer; 2 in 65; 1 in 66. (PCGS # 9116) .
Of the 124 pieces minted, we estimate that perhaps 50 to 75 still exist. The 1900 is on a par with most other post-1900 Proofs in rarity and availability, but truly, availability is not all that great since these tend to be locked away in "name" collections or in museum strong-boxes. Ultra Cameo frosted Proof 64 grade examples are therefore especially desirable.
