Lot 258

1851 N-24/32 N-3 PCGS graded MS63 Brown, CAC Approved. Frosty light to medium steel brown with 5% of the original mint color remaining, mostly on the reverse. Lustrous and very attractive. No spots and just a couple trivial marks, including a tiny planchet flake left of the peak of the first 1 and a very small rim nick at O in OF. LDS, die state c, Newcomb's old #32. The die lines from the inner and main curls are gone, just a few faint points from the inner curl remaining. The die lines from the throat are dull and very faint. A light but clear die line or crack passes through the upper half of star 8, strongest into the field from its upper left point. Our grade is MS60, CC#5 overall but finest of the late (old N-32) die state in the Grellman census. Note: Quoted from Grellman in his 2001 edition of the attribution guide for late date large cents, page 264: "Newcomb confused his varieties #24, 27, & 32, both in his book and in his collection. The irregular (die lines or) cracks through star 8 seen on N-24 were described by him for N-27, and the repunching over the left base of the first 1 (for today's N-27) was described by Newcomb for his #32. Delisting his #32 was an arbitrary decision made long ago, but one of his numbers had to go." The attribution and Iskra provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 1 finer in 66 for the variety at PCGS. Estimated Value $500-UP
