Lot 248

1817 N-12 R3 NGC graded MS61 Brown. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate mixed with puffs of darker olive brown. Peeps of faded mint red show in a few of the protected areas on both sides. A small spot of darker reddish chocolate toning on the left base of the N in ONE is a good identifying mark. There is a light touch of friction on the highest points but to the unaided eye this cent looks very nice. However, a glass reveals some light scraping on the die crack that connects the digits of the date with stars 1 and 13. This wouldn't show except that the scraping left lighter coppery tan toning on the raised crack. Obviously someone thought the crack was a defect and attempted to "improve" the coin. Regardless, it's still a very nice example of a variety that is very difficult to locate in grades above VF. MDS. The die crack through the date is wide and an earlier die crack through star 1 now bends to reach the dentils below. Our grade is AU50 sharpness net EF40.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.
