Lot 243

1804 S-266c R2 NGC graded XF45. Glossy dark chocolate brown with lighter chocolate brown toning on the devices. Hints of lighter reddish brown toning in the center of the reverse testify to an ancient cleaning, but this cent offers great eye appeal. No roughness or verdigris, only trivial contact marks. A diagonal nick very well hidden in the curl left of the date is a good identifying mark, but it is easy to miss, even with a glass. Sharply struck LDS, Breen state IV, with bold cud breaks at RTY and MERIC. A premium example of this popular date. Our grade is EF40+ sharpness net VF35. Housed in an older generation NGC slab. Estimated Value $7,500-UP

Ex McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 2/8/1999:2130-R. J. Rudolph Collection (lot ticket included).
