1894 $20. NGC graded MS-61. Lovely golden orange shades are displayed on both sides. A large number of double eagles found their way into European bank vaults in the up to the time of the great depression, and later after WWII. The Swiss banks, among others, began selling them to gold jobbers in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s, the source of many of these lustrous Mint State twenties. There is a misconception among historians that the Franklin Roosevelt administration melted most of the gold in 1933-37, but the evidence goes contrary to this belief.
