1794 S-38 R5 PCGS AU Detail Environmental Damage. Dark steel and olive brown. The surfaces are a bit dull but do show a hint of gloss in spite of uniform extremely fine granularity that covers both sides. Traces of shallow verdigris can be found in a few of the protected areas, but you need a strong glass to find it. There are no contact marks. Sharply struck LDS, Breen state I (in our opinion Breen has the die states reversed). Only a single lump shows in the field below the cap. Graded EF40 net VF20 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #32038. Bland says VF25 and tied for CC#4. Our grade is EF40 sharpness net VF25. Comes with a wonderful provenance that includes many of the most prominent collectors of early cents. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Estimated Value $6,000 - UP
