Lot 232

1793 S-1 R4 Chain AMERI. PCGS graded F15. Attractive glossy medium chocolate brown. The surfaces are smooth, void of any traces of corrosion or verdigris, and the eye appeal is excellent. There are some minor marks, all consistent with the grade. The notable marks are a thin planchet flake between the feet of the 1 & 7 in the date (as struck), and a minor rim bruise left of the O in OF. The date is easily readable although the lower two-thirds of the 1 is weak, and the legends are strong. MDS, Breen state III, with an obvious bulge at the top of the U in UNITED and minor die clashmarks at the truncation of the portrait. A nice example of the very popular Chain AMERI variety, supposedly our first federal large cent struck at the fledgling US Mint in Philadelphia. Our grade is VG8 (although the reverse would grade a few points higher which is typical of the variety). The attribution and Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2 in Fine; 8 finer for the variety. PCGS #35432. Estimate Value $15,000 - UP
