Lot 227

1850 N-24 R4+ PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Choice frosty medium brown and light chocolate. Great eye appeal, but there is a trace of very light friction on the highest points of the devices. The only notable mark is a spot of darker olive brown toning on the rim over the E in AMERICA. MDS. The obverse die is heavily worn from extensive use in the earlier N-18 and N-23 marriages leaving the top of the 0 in the date faint, but the die lines and points on the new reverse die are clear. Noyes photo #30519. Our grade is AU50, CC#4 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Naftzger provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer for the variety and the only example graded MSBN at PCGS. Estimated Value $2,000-UP

Ex Chris McCawley 3/1991 (via J. R. Grellman)-R. E. Naftzger, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 9/7/2009:1010-Greg Hannigan 2/19/2010-Fred Iskra Collection (includes the Naftzger collection envelope and lot ticket).
